biography

Wolfgang Aschberg aka normanexSE (b. 1965, Hamburg) is a German contemporary narrative artist whose work explores psychological tension, fragmentation, memory and transformation. Moving between figuration and abstraction, his paintings combine symbolic narrative, gestural force and layered surfaces into emotionally charged visual compositions.

Aschberg’s artistic journey began in childhood through drawing and painting, influenced early by the surreal worlds of Salvador Dalí and the emotional depth of Edvard Munch. A formative moment came when a neighbouring artist, who had lost his eyesight, entrusted him with a set of oil paints — materials that would remain untouched for years before becoming the foundation of his later artistic practice.

Alongside his artistic development, Aschberg spent decades working in professional environments shaped by discipline, pressure and psychological intensity. These experiences profoundly informed his understanding of human behaviour, emotional structures and inner conflict. After a long period away from painting, he returned to art through a process of personal and creative transformation.

Today, his works emerge from an intuitive and physically layered process he describes as “ActionPAINting” — a dialogue between gesture, reflection, destruction and reconstruction. Figurative elements dissolve into abstraction, while recurring symbols and fragmented bodies create open narratives that resist fixed interpretation.

Rather than illustrating biography directly, Aschberg’s paintings investigate universal emotional states: vulnerability, control, isolation, resilience and the instability of identity. His practice is driven by the belief that art is not decoration, but communication — an invitation to confront what often remains unspoken.
